What Stone Is a Narmadeshwar Shivling Made From?

Our Narmadeshwar Shivlings are made from selected stones sourced from the Narmada River. Narmadeshwar is a devotional and provenance-related identity; it does not independently specify one scientific mineral or rock type. Identifying the geological composition of a particular piece requires study of that specimen.

Why not assign one rock name to every piece?

Colour, photographs and commercial terminology cannot classify every item as the same rock. Similar appearances may occur in different materials. Calling a specimen quartz, basalt or another exact material without examination would not be a reliable description.

Natural material and machine work

The stone is natural, while our finished lingam shape is produced by machine and then hand-finished and polished. Shaping does not automatically make the material synthetic. Both facts should be communicated clearly; natural should not conceal how an item was made.

Ask about the base as well

The lingam and jaladhari can be made from different stones. Do not assume the whole set has identical material because of its upright component. Our collection includes stone bases; marble should not be stated without confirmation. For an Akhand design, verify that lingam and base are prepared from a single stone.

Composition and provenance are different claims

An analysis of a stone’s components is not the same as proving its river source. If documentation is supplied, read who issued it and what the examination covers. Maker details, actual photos, precise dimensions and a clear material description help an informed purchase.

Care of the surface

Use plain water and a soft cloth. Avoid strong acids, chemical cleaners, scraping with metal and sudden extreme temperature changes. Ask the maker for care instructions if a special coating or finish is present.
